MATES in Construction Induction

Property Partners Group are delighted to partner with Kainga Ora in a pilot programme for our largest 90 unit development of social housing in Mangere. As our largest site this allows us to have the widest possible reach with all the various trades and sub consultants on this complex site.

The construction industry has launched a new on-site programme - Mates In Construction - to try to reduce its highest rate of suicide of all industries in New Zealand.

Mates in Construction is an Australian initiative newly arrived in New Zealand where the programme has been running for 11 years and construction industry suicides have fallen 8 per cent. This has been modified to be fit for purpose here.

It is designed to help workers recognise the signs of mates "doing it tough", to start talking to them about it rather than doing nothing, and to get long-term support for the people that need it.

If successful it would soften the macho culture blamed in part for the construction industry having the highest suicide figures for any industry group - 6.9 per cent, just a bit higher than the forestry and farming at 6.8 per cent.

Kainga Ora have got behind this and asked our Group to be involved in a new to New Zealand pilot to test it in residential construction.

We are delighted to support our industry in reducing the impacts of mental health and along with our association with the Mental Health Foundation this is an ideal partnership for us to support.
